2021-09-13 - The membership of this church dwindled suddenly and sharply over the past couple years, and in 2020 the congregation decided to downsize by meeting in people's homes, and to sell the church they could not longer afford to maintain. However, on November 7, 2020, an electrical fire broke out in the choir area at the right front of the sanctuary and burning through the floor, destroyed two rooms below. The fire burned especially hot, and the organ in the front chamber behind the fire area, sustained extreme heat and water damage. While the organ (or at least some interior chambered parts) were perhaps recoverable, it was declared a total loss. As of September 2021, the building is currently abandoned. The congregation was the first in the area, having been founded by Palantines in 1773. The present imposing brick structure was built in 1868, replacing the original brick church constructed in the 1790s, and was the largest church in town. The church was known to have had a tracker at one time, but no details have come to light. -Scot Huntington
