2016-06-13 - An original installation. Identified by Steve Bartley, using information found in Sun Paper 5/5/1873 pg1, Der deutsche Correspondent 5/5/1873.

The Bethany congregation moved form their older Brick building, still extant, at the rear of the lot, & facing Calhoun Street, to this larger building in 1873. The building was a first, in Baltimore as it was a large frame building clad inside and out sheet iron panels, which were embossed to give the appearance of stone (similar to a tin ceiling) All in the style of a Victorian Gothic church.

Also new, the floor was sloped 4', with the pews built in a semi circle. There was no pulpit, but a curved altar rail. The organ and choir were placed at the rear of this altar area, and raised 5' from the floor. The Sun paper 8/20/1938 announced the demolition of the building to make way for a gas station. Fortunately the gas station was never built, but the building had already been demolished. The German newspaper "Der deutsche Correspondent" for 5/5/1873 included a spec for the organ. -Database Manager
