2016-12-05 - Organ relocated without any change. Identified by James R. Stettner, based on information learned from a conversation with Christy Schaefer -- daughter of present owner.
The organ was originally built for the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Portland, Oregon, but was temporarily installed in the Hall of Music of the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. It was in place there when President McKinley was assassinated. It remained in Portland until 1936 at which time it was relocated by Balcom and Vaughan of Seattle, Washington to First Presbyterian Church in Pendleton, Oregon where it was installed without changes.
At some point the former Portland Estey Representative (H.C. Ferris) had added a Morton Diapason to the organ. In July 1941, the organ was damaged in an explosion caused by a gas leak that ignited when the organist switched on the blower. The blower and console were destroyed. The organ was rebuilt by Balcom and Vaughan in August 1941 utilizing a used WurliTzer console with new Kilgen manuals, pedalboard, and 'swells', Reisner stopkeys, and Morton regulators and tremulants. The Aeolian chests and pipework survived, but the primary and secondary pneumatics were torn by the force of the explosion.
In 1966-67, First Presbyterian purchased a new 3-manual Moller, and the Aeolian was relocated to Zion Lutheran in Nampa, Idaho by an unknown person or firm. It replaced a 2-manual Moller of ca. 1948 that was likely an 'Artiste.'
The AEolian remained at Zion Lutheran in Nampa until ca. 2006. It was in need of re-leathering, and the church elected to get a new instrument rather than sink money into the old organ. It was purchased from the church by Mr. Schaefer for $1.00 and removed by him and several others. It was packed into a barn and has been in storage ever since.
Now (November 2016) the Schaefer home is for sale, and a home is being sought for the organ. -Database Manager
