2017-08-10 - This entry describes an original installation of a new pipe organ.
Identified by Steve Bartley, citing information from this publication: Evening Star 3/3/1854 pg 3. . Additionally, Steve Bartley listed this web site as a source of information: https://ggwash.org/view/4116/then-and-now-new-york-avenue-presbyterian-church.
The Second Presbyterian Church was said to be a small building, put up in 1820. In 1859, the F street Presbyterian congregation joined with the Second, at the Second's location. The congregation was renamed "New York Avenue Prebyterian", and a new larger building was put up in the site. Some histories say the 2nd Presbyterian building was on 14th street, which is possible, as the 1859 building consumed the entire triangle shaped site.
The following is from the Evening Star Newspaper.
"CHURCH ORGANS-We had the pleasute, yesterday, of meeting our old friend Pomplitz, of the firm Pomplitz & Rodewald, organ builders of Baltimore. He is here to superintend the erection of an organ in the Second Presbyerian Church. It is a fine instrument of its size, and well suited to the size of the church. The cost of the instrument is $600. It has ten stops, viz:
open diapason, bass & treble; stop do; dulciana flute; principal; twelfth; fifteenth and violincello; separate pedal; swell pedal and bellows alarm." -Database Manager
