2023-11-03 - Church of the Ascension’s Pipe Organ, A History The instrument’s life began as a convent organ in 1842. Ascension’s original frame church, located next to our present structure, was built in 1875, this bellows-operated organ was purchased, moved, and installed here in its new home. In 1918 when the present church building was completed, The Voeteler, Holtkamp, Sparling Organ Company installed, augmented, and electrified the 1842 instrument in Ascension’s new church building. A storm in the mid-1970’s storm caused extensive water damage to the pipe organ’s chambers and the instrument began to fail. In 1980, Mr. William Ellenberger was commissioned to remove, rebuild, reconfigure, and add two additional ranks. By the late 1990’s, the original console started to show its age and the appearance of many winding problems made it impossible to continue using the organ. In 2000, a capital improvement project was initiated to restore, upgrade, rebuild the loft, and augment Ascension’s pipe organ. The Holtkamp Organ Company completed this task in the fall of 2003. Today’s Ascension pipe organ is a three-manual instrument consisting of 23 ranks in four divisions. Two ranks from the original 1842 convent organ are still part of the instrument today. -Davis Badaszewski
