This was the relocation and restoration of Hook opus 304, 1861 originally built for Eighth Methodist/Tremont Street Methodist (New Hope Baptist at time of removal) in Boston, Massachusetts, and installed inside the extant case of Hammond Street Congregational Church's original 1854 E. & G.G. Hook, Opus 159. -Database Manager
2024-10-01 - This church was originally home to E. & G.G. Hook, Opus 159, 1854. Sadly, in the 1960's they replaced the Hook with an electronic substitute with the speakers placed inside the retained 1854 Hook case. One parishioner - Waldo McClure “Mac” Libbey - was so distraught with the loss he left the parish and only showed-up once in a while. When he passed-away January 10, 2009, he left the parish $183,000.00 to acquire another pipe organ. If this was not accomplished within ten years, the funds would go to other charities. Not long after learning of Libbey’s bequest, Pastor Doty of Hammond Street Congregational encountered Kevin Birch, who is Music Director at St. John Catholic Church in Bangor. St. John's has an 1861 Hook that has been restored and is part of an active concert series. Mr. Birch had learned of an available 1861 Hook organ in Boston, Opus 304, at New Hope Baptist Church (originally Eighth Methodist Church; then Tremont Street Methodist). The congregation was looking for a buyer for its Hook organ, and Birch helped connect Rev. Doty to that congregation. The organ was purchased, removed by Vermont organ builder A. David Moore of North Pomfret, and restored. It was reinstalled inside the extant case of Hammond Street's 1854 Hook. The 1854 Hook had been a bit smaller, so the Pedal 16' Dble Dulciana had to borrow its bottom octave from the Great 8' Dble. Op. Diapason as there was insufficient height and room for the bottom twelve 16' pipes. The entire case also had to be moved away from the back wall about three feet to make room for the Pedal division. The pedalboard of the moved and restored 1861 Hook had also been 25-notes. The pedal compass was increased to 27 notes with the action extended, and all pedal ranks receiving two new pipes to complete the compass. Both the Great 8' Stopped Diapason and 4' Flute have 12 stopped wood basses and are then metal chimney flutes. The Great 4' Clarion is entirely new.
