2017-12-04 - This entry describes an original installation of a new pipe organ.
Identified by J. A. Hefner, listing this website as a source of information: http://www.oldchesterpa.com/churches/firstpreschurch.htm.
From http://www.oldchesterpa.com/churches/firstpreschurch.htm
"On April 29, 1870 the new church organ arrived. It had 24 stops and nearly 1,000 pipes, being at that time the largest or at least one of the largest in Delaware County. It cost $2500, and on May 5 it was officially dedicated to the ministry of music by Professor Harry E. Thunder of Philadelphia, who presented a concert at the time."
No mention of builder - the church itself was constructed in 1851 at the corner of Fourth [formerly Clinton] and Welsh Streets. The congregation moved to a new church constructed 1921 at 2305 Edgmont Avenue. The 4th/Welsh location changed hands and at one point became Cornwall's Garage, but there is no trace of the church today.
The 1870 organ is visible in an undated photo; it is partly enclosed in a case at the back of the chancel. When the congregation moved, it appears they ordered a new organ bearing a slight resemblance to the old one [perhaps this is Möller opus 3409], and the Edgmont location became Way Through Christ Mennonite Ministry, later Way Thru Christ Community Church. -Database Manager
