2020-11-24 - From the NYC AGO NYC Organ Project: Redeemer-St. John Lutheran Church was organized on June 1, 1975, following the merger of two congregations. In the 1960s and 1970s, many urban churches experienced declining membership as families moved to the suburbs. It was during this period that the two congregations began talks to merge into one. The former St. John German Evangelical Lutheran Church, founded in 1888, was formerly located on 84th Street near 16th Avenue in New Utrecht. St. John's congregation moved into the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, founded in 1925, and located on 83rd Street in the Dyker Heights area of Brooklyn. The present organ was built in 1970 by the Schantz Organ Company of Orrville, Ohio. Both the Great and Swell divisions are enclosed, and all pipes are voiced on 3½" wind pressure. -Jeff Scofield
