2023-10-21 - The Baptist congregation dedicated a large contemporary building of architectural significance in 1952, expanded with a large classroom building in 1965. Dissatisfied with plans by Saarinen and Saarinen, they ultimately decided on a building designed by J. Robert Swanson working in the Saarinen style. The organ was designed by Robert Noehren and was installed free standing in an acoustically ideal location behind an open wood screen on the left side of the chancel. There were no visible pipes, and the Swell and Choir were enclosed in tall, shallow Swell boxes with shutters on two sides. The liberal congregation renamed itself Woodside Church in 1961, and disassociated an exclusive affiliation with the American Baptist Church, and instead affiliated with three different denominations. By 2014, the demographics of Flint had changed dramatically, as had the fortunes of the once prosperous Woodside Church. The congregation rechristened itself the People's Church, a bible-based Christian group, sold the historic church complex to the local university for a learning center, and moved into a downtown tire store. The church website has not been updated since 2022, and the most recent video of a church service made last year showed a congregation of about 7 people sitting in folding chairs around a makeshift altar. The fate of the landmark Schlicker is unknown, and is a cause for considerable concern. -Scot Huntington
