2021-04-03 - The organ was tonally rebuilt in 1971 as a neo-baroque organ with pre-voiced pipework obtained from the Casavant company at the end of the Phelps era. The octagenarian organist, who was not in favor of the rebuild, insisted the Clarinet Flute be retained, which was the prettiest voice in the rebuilt organ, but not of a piece with the new voices having a more brilliant and articulate nature. The Odell windchests, facade, keydesk and action were retained. The organ is installed in a side chancel chamber. -Scot Huntington
2021-04-03 - The organ was given by Miss Mary Fargo, and her sister Ann Fargo Perry of Buffalo in memory of their mother Libby Pendergast Fargo of Westfield and a life-long communicant of the church. The contract was signed January 31, 1896 and the instrument was to be installed by June 15, 1896. The cost was $2,430.00, the organ was a style No. 30, and was installed in a side chancel chamber of the 1830 brick church. The builder was to provide a water motor for operating the feeders. Two Swell combination pedals were added above the standard design, which specified combo pedals for the Great Organ only as standard equipment. The Odell contract for this file in the American Organ Archives includes an appended note stating that a letter to the company from Dr. R.R. Northrup of Westfield in October 1953 advised them that the organ was changed by an unnamed source in 1928 as follows: an Aeoline 8' replaced the Great Super Octave 2', the Swell Cornet II was removed from the Swell and replaced with the Great Super Octave as a Piccolo 2' [perhaps revoiced?] on one slide, and a t.c. Celeste 8' on the other; additionally, "Something done with the Oboe that is not clear". This altered condition is the state of the organ until it was rebuilt as an essentially new organ with old parts by the Jackson company of Erie, PA in 1971. -Scot Huntington
2021-04-03 - According to the church website, the west wall of the altar guild sacristy was made from the organ's shipping crate. -Scot Huntington
