NOTES
The contract was signed December 19, 1895, and the organ was to be delivered and
installed by Easter Sunday, 1896. The contract price was $3,500.00. The space in
which the organ was to be placed was the baptistery on the left side of the chancel.
It was shallow, and Steere ultimately requested an extension to change the key action
to electric to allow for greater compactness. The extension was granted.

The case is of quarter-sawn oak. The facade contains 35 stenciled pipes arranged:
12 – 1 – 12, of which 19 are from the Great 8' Open Diapason. As originally contracted
only the Swell and what was called Solo (renamed Choir) were to be expressive. But as
installed, all manual divisions were expressive save for the Great 8 Open Diapason. The
Pedal 16' Sub Bass is behind the enclosure.

The organ was purchased in honor of his wife by Anaconda copper baron Marcus Daly, and
was meant - in part - to up-stage his Butte competitor, Senator William H. Clark who had
purchased a 2-manual Hook and Hastings in honor of his wife which was installed at St.
John's Episcopal Church in Butte.
