2020-06-10 - This entry documents a relocated organ, identified by James R. Stettner, based on a sale listing on Facebook's *Pipe Organ Garage Sale*. The original home of the organ is not presently known. While it has a traditional church-style console, the organ has both toe studs and rocker tablets [framing the couplers] which controlled sound effects. -James R. Stettner
2020-06-11 - Updated through online information from Peter Rudewicz (as posted on Facebook *Kimball Pipe Organs*, June 10, 2020). -- In 1932, George E. Devendorf purchased an organ for his residence in Great Neck, Long Island from the Æolian-Skinner Organ Company. This instrument was Opus 898, a small organ of two manuals and nine ranks. It was an identical twin to its cousin, Op. 899, and would have been equipped with a Duo-Art player in the console. Apparently dissatisfied with the instrument, Devendorf had Æolian-Skinner return in 1934 to enlarge the organ, adding at least another 8’ Open Diapason, 4’ Octave, and 8’ Clarinet. The story becomes a bit murky here, and we have to rely on some historical conjecture to piece together what happened. Devendorf apparently still felt that the organ was inadequate, and contracted W.W. Kimball to greatly expand the organ, including a new console. “Music for the Millions” makes mention of Mr. Devendorf being the owner of a substantial Kimball residence organ. It’s safe to assume this is the instrument in question. However, there are no factory documents available and George Michel’s notes do not mention the organ either. Kimball seems to have provided a “new” organ that included virtually all of the pipework and mechanism of Æolian-Skinner Op. 898-A, some older Kimball pipes from the early 20th century, and new pipes that are characteristic of Kimball construction in the 1930’s. Presumably the organ was equipped with a roll player. This instrument was given a KPO number-7212. At some point in the 50’s, the house was sold and the organ discarded. By way of parties unknown, it landed as a giant mess of pieces in a vulture infested barn in Eastern New York. < snip > -Jim Stettner
