2020-12-16 - Known from "Brief Delaware News" in the *Philadelphia Times,* Dec 12, 1897, p. 21. "The Methodist Church at MIddletown has received a handsome new pipe organ which will be heard to-morrow." From the church website: "In 1899, the altar was extended to accommodate a new Browne [sic] pipe organ, with its large organ box. Its blowers which were operated by hand, was on the first floor. Robert Richardson was an “organ boy”, sometimes operated the blowers." -Paul R. Marchesano

2021-04-07 - "In 1899, also during the pastorate of Rev. I. L. Wood, it was determined by the Official Board, to replace the old Hook & Hastings organ, by one of more modern make. A competent committee of which Mr. Joseph C. Parker was chairman had the work in hand. After carefully considering the merits and demerits of the various makers, it was at last thought best to give the contract to **Mr. John Brown, of Wilmington, Delaware.** In order to accommodate this instrument the pulpit and altar had to be brought out, which has not only made room for the organ, but has been found to add greatly to the comfort of the choir, and to the beauty of the Church. This instrument fills up the entire recess in rear of the pulpit. The superior workmanship of this instrument and its beautiful adornments, not only adds a charm to the edifice, but the sweet tones as brought out by the skillful touches of the organist, Miss Lena Pleasanton, delight the ear and inspires the audience with true worship of Almighty God. The entire cost of these improvements was about $1,200." -- Information provided by Charles Eberline, taken from “The History and Growth of Bethesda Methodist Episcopal Church," Middletown (DE) Transcript, April 6, 1901, [2], *Chronicling America.* -Paul R. Marchesano
