2021-05-11 - Opus 536, built by the Louisville Pipe Organ Company (LPO), was the third to last theater organ built by the firm. It was originally installed in the Dream Theater, Indianapolis Indiana. The organ was moved to the Lawrence United Methodist Church in Lawrence, Indiana in 1941. The organ was acquired by Maurice Finkel in 1970 and moved to his home in Shelbyville, Indiana. The organ is still original. LPO used pipework made by A. Gottfried. The organ is on 8" of wind pressure. The original relay, still in use, is located in the console. There is no combination action. The organ never had traps or percussion. Ranks include: Tibia Clause - 97 note Diapason - 73 note Viol d'Orchestra - 73 note Oboe Horn - 61 note Vox Humana - 73 Note The Gottfried Oboe Horn is a rank used often by LPO. It is recognizable by its distinctive shape and key hole. It provides a mellow, ensemble building sound. There is only one tremulant. The chests do not have a primary valve, yet speak very quickly. They are simple and compact unit chests. Opus 536 has 73" manual chests and uses a 1hp 3 phase Spencer Orgoblo. The organ has a horseshoe console decorated to match the inside of the theater. The original colors were royal blue and gold. It has since been repainted cream and gold. The keys are ivory and all the stop tabs are original. Flues are white, reeds are red, string and tremolo are amber. Other than brief periods when the organ was moved, it has played consistantly since 1928. David M. Finkel May 2021 -David M. Finkel
