Notes

2021-08-30 - This organ is not on the opus lists for Haskell and appears to fall into a gap before reporting new opuses happens in the *Diapason* which starts ca. 1914 for Haskell. Doylestown Presbyterian has an extensive written history including its music program in *A HISTORY OF DOYLESTOWN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH*. Some excerpts pertaining to the procurement of this organ: 1) [Page 13]"On April 12, 1913 it was decided to dispose of the old pipe organ and install a new one. On September 25, 1913 an organ recital was given on the new $6500 organ built by C. S. Haskell of Philadelphia. F. A. A. Maxsen of the same city presided at the organ. It was said that the organ was magnificent, powerful and beautiful, dignified and churchly-and well-fitted to support the churchly music. One of the new features was the enclosure of the entire organ, with the exception of two stops in swell boxes for greater expressive control and variety of tone. " 2) [Pages 65-66] "A major project of replacing the organ began in 1912. An Organ Committee was formed and was composed of Watkins, Steckel, Long, Gross and Shearer, with Henry 0. Harris as chairman, Henry Case as treasurer, and J. P. Weiss as secretary. Dr. Dalhes was to obtain specifications. The committee contacted R. Midmer, Felgermacher, Kimball, Esley, Standard, Hutchings, Skinner and Haskill, Austin, and Bates and Cully organ companies. Bates and Cully was selected. A proposal was made to put the organ in the center, but the congregation turned this down and it was decided to place the organ on the side. Bates and Cully withdrew its bid, leaving the committee back where it started. It was finally decided to purchase the organ from C. S. Haskell of Philadelphia. It was noted that Henry Case resigned as treasurer, whereupon J.P. Weiss became treasurer. On September 26, 1913 the Bucks County Intelligencer reported that Builder C. S. Haskell was to hold an organ recital at the church. Frederick A. Maxson was to hold an organ recital at the church. Frederick A. Maxson was to preside at the organ and Nelson A. Chestnutt, a tenor soloist would sing. Mr. Chestnutt was a soloist at the Walnut Street Presbyterian Church, formerly of First Baptist. The evening was a great success. " -Zenas Savage

2023-03-16 - Destroyed by fire 23 September 1915, as reported on the front page of the 24 September 1915 issue of the *Akron Beacon Journal.* -Thurlow B. Weed

2025-01-10 - The information from Thurlow Weed about a fire destroying this instrument is incorrect, Doylestown Presbyterian in Doylestown, PA has never had a fire. Perhaps this might being confused with a possible church in Doylestown, Ohio, Yes, there is a Doylestown Ohio and it would make sense for there to be a newspaper report in a paper from Akron. When the current instrument in this church, was installed, the gentleman from Schantz thought it was odd they were not traveling to the Doylestown near them, but packing for as longer stay out of town. -Robert Miller
