Notes

2021-10-26 - From the January 1967 issue of THE DIAPASON: The Hewitt and Wessel Organ Builders, Brattleboro, Vt., have rebuilt and enlarged the organ of the First United Church of Christ, Holyoke, Mass. It has five different divisions: swell, great, choir, positiv and pedal, with a total of 49 ranks. The positiv, a completely new section, overhangs the balcony. Its case resembles some of the organs built in Holland in the 15th and 16th centuries and was designed by John Wessel. Playable from all three manuals of the main console, it has its own console in the balcony which can be played independently. The wings of the case can be folded to create four different patterns around the positiv and can be folded to conceal the display pipes. The 4-ft. prestant and the 2-ft. Italian principal are included in the display, all of polished tin. The great is exposed, showing the diapason chorus and pedal mixture. John Wessel drew up the specification. Harriette Slack Richardson, Springfield, Vt. played the dedicatory last May. -Jeff Scofield

2021-10-26 - Early in 20th century, First United Church merged with the German Reformed Church; they then merged in 1973 with Grace Church to become Grace United Church; Grace merged in 1996 with Second Congregational UCC to become the United Congregational Church of Holyoke. -Jeff Scofield
