2022-03-10 - Known from an announcement of the inspection and acceptance of the organ (See DOCUMENTS tab): "TESTED THE PIPE ORGAN | Andrew Carnegie's Gift, to First Presbyterian Chaich a Fine One. | Professor W. L. Mayer, of Pittsburg, representing Mr. Andrew Carnegie, was in the city yesterday, his visit being made for the purpose of testing the fine pipe organ presented by Mr. Carnegie to the First Presbyterian church, preparatory to accepting it from its builders, J. B. Didinger & Co., Philadelphia. Professor Mayer stated it was in the best condition possible and pronounced it to be one of the best to be found in the state between Pittsburg and Philadelphia. The vox humana stops are particularly fine. The organ is built of quartered oak of the best quality. On the front is a bronze tablet on which are the words "Donated by Andrew Carnegie." The people of the First church appreciate very highly the tboughfulness of the donor, all the more so for the reason that it is the first gift ever given by Mr. Carnegie to a church in this city. Many were the visitors who were attracted to the church yesterday and all were highly pleased. It is the intention of Professor Mayer to return to Altoona in the near future and give an organ recital before the auditorium is formally opened. In this he will be assisted by some of the best local talent." -- Altoona Tribune (Altoona, Pennsylvania) · 6 Jan 1900, Sat · Page 1 -Paul R. Marchesano
