2022-03-14 - This instrument incorporated most of the pipework of the previous organ. The church history states the previous organ up to the time of the 1923 chancel enlargement and redecoration, was "a small instrument on the left side of the altar, and the choir was seated on the right side". E. & G.G. Hook & Hastings installed No. 675 in 1875, and unless there was another organ installed in the interim, it is the Hook that Hillgreen, Lane & Co. rebuilt and enlarged in 1923. The organ was divided on either side of the altar in shallow, free-standing chamber-esque cases, fronted with gothic tracery. In 1984 the Schlicker Organ Co. installed a new electric-action 2-manual organ in the same arrangement, as part of a chancel updating/redecoration, but with more simplified and generic case work, filled with pleated cloth instead of facade pipes. Examination of the organ would determine whether any pipework from the former organ was repurposed in the Schlicker. -Scot Huntington
2022-03-14 - Contract signed March 1, 1923, ready for use on or about August 25, 1923. The total cost was $10, 950.00, +with no money down. One-half of the purchase price was due upon acceptance by the church's organ expert, George Edward Fisher. Hillgreen financed the remaining balance across three payments bearing 6% interest, at 6, 12 and 18-month intervals. There is a discrepancy in the contract regarding the couplers. There are Echo to Echo 16' and 4' couplers, plus "Echo on, Great off", and the Echo is only playable on the Great. There is a Solo to Great 4' coupler, obviously an error, and this is crossed out. Written by hand at this entry, are Echo to Great 16', 8', and 4' couplers. These couplers would duplicate the function of the Echo to Echo, and Echo on couplers, making them superfluous. -Scot Huntington
