2005-06-14 - On-line update from Lawrence Bishop -- For better tuning access, the bottom Gt. Diapason pipes were removed, and the Appleton case pipes utilized. The Sw. Dolcissimo is tuned as a Celeste. It is believed by some of us, and acknowledged by Alan Laufman ("Miscellanea Organica," The Northeast Organist, Nov. & Dec. 1996) that the source for the Appleton case of this organ is the 1830 Appleton organ in South Congregational Church, Hartford. I have documentation that the church purchased a large Appleton organ in the fall of 1854, several months after Johnson replaced the Appleton in Hartford. The newspaper articles do not state that the organ was used, or from another location, so the evidence is circumstatial. However, the price paid could indicate that the organ was not new. -Database Manager
