Notes

2022-09-09 - **From builder ad, *1992 OHS Handbook*:** Knowlton Organ Company, recently relocated to Davidson, North Carolina, has rebuilt a fine trackeraction pipe organ, built c. 1875, for the Church of the Ascension in Rembert (Hagood), South Carolina. The organist, Mrs. Floride McKoy, states that "Our worship committee decided it would be better stewardship of our resources to purchase a fine old pipe organ and have it restored, than another electronic with a relatively short lifespan." The organ, relocated through the Organ Clearing House, is of uncertain provenance, though it is consistent with organs built in New York City in the 1870s. At some time, perhaps in the 1890s, the instrument was enlarged from one to two manuals with the addition of a Swell manual, pallet box, and couplers. The excellent craftsmen at Knowlton Organ Company, directed by Benjamin K. Williams, endeavored to reverse some of the unwise alterations made to the organ over time, and made tonal changes to better reflect the traditional practices of the period and to yield a more satisfying musical result. Mrs. McKoy concludes, "The men at Knowlton Organ Company are quick to respond when there Is an adjustment or minor repair to be made. Their expertise has enabled us to feel confident that we made the right choice for our church." -Paul R. Marchesano

2023-06-08 - Organ has been attributed to George Jardine & Sons. [no documentation provided] Organ location originally Maryland, then Maine. Purchased by David E. Wallace, Gorham, Maine, then purchased and rebuilt by Knolton, 1991 for Church of the Ascension, Hagood, SC. -- information from online submission -Paul R. Marchesano

2023-06-08 - Church history indicates that "the congregation paid for the organ" at the time the building was built, in 1895-1896. The builder or type of organ (whether was a pipe organ or reed organ, etc.) is not identified. -Paul R. Marchesano
