2022-11-15 - From the NYC AGO NYC Organ Project, Steve Lawson: The Essex Theatre was built in 1913 and had 610 seats. Throughout most of its life, the theatre showed second- and third-run double bills. In the late 60s it went Spanish, sometimes English films with Spanish subtitles, and eventually all Spanish language. In 1988 the theatre was sold and, after a mild renovation, the name was changed to the Columbia Cinema. The theatre closed in 1993. This contract for this organ (March 10, 1926) includes the notation, "Rebuilt from Lebanon organ." Midmer-Losh built organs for three churches in Lebanon, Pa., so is possible that the firm rebuilt one of the organs taken in trade. The console compass is 61 notes (manuals) and 32 notes (Pedal), although the pipe counts are 58 and 30. Total cost was $3,250. -Jeff Scofield
