2022-12-23 - From "About our Organ"...Our renovation project started with our "old" seyen rank pipe organ that was located in the right transept of the church. In the desire to keep costs down and preserve the pipework of our old organ, it was decided to add to this organ by purchasing from the Central Presbyterian Church of Tarentum PA the console and six ranks of their Schantz organ. To do this work, St. Joseph Parish hired David Richards of the Allegheny Pipe Organ Co. to rebuild this instrument and unite it with our seven rank organ. Our old organ would be the new instrument's Great Division while the Schantz pipes would be the basis for the Swell Division. In addition, a used Oboe, Salicional, Celeste, and a three rank mixture were added to this Swell Division by the installer, David Richards, while a Moeller 8' Trumpet purchased from the Lee Organ Co. of Tennessee was added along with a 16' electronic trumpet. Thus, a total of 22 ranks of organ pipes, a total of 1,348 pipes in all, were ready for installation. It was next decided to place these pipes in the upper front transept chambers overlooking the sanctuary where the sound would travel and be heard best throughout the Nave of the church. The project took over a year to complete, but the results have been a unique blending of new and old, a combining of a variety of pipe timbre to produce a harmonious mixture of full and bright organ sounds. To pay for this instrument, the parishioners of St. Joseph parish, through the annual CSA fund drive, donated generously. The cost was just over $33,000 which, very importantly, is a fraction of the cost, approximately one-fourth, for a similar instrument purchased new with an equal amount of pipe ranks. -Paul R.
