Notes

2023-01-28 - This was a sprawling property in the lower Hudson Valley with million-dollar views of the Catskill Mountains. At the turn of the 20th century, the "Barrytown Novitiate" of the Brothers of Christian Schools was a training seminary for priests and brothers wishing to enter the teaching profession. In 1929, John D. Rockefeller purchased a large estate and gifted it to them as a campus for use as a residential boarding school for catholic high-school boys. Central on the campus was a large and reverberant chapel fitted with a Kilgen organ. In 1963 the Delaware company installed a new 3-manual organ in the rear gallery. In 1969, the school closed and the bucolic 250-acre campus was sold to the Unification Church in 1975, where the Rev. Sun Myung Moon envisioned the creation of the first Unification Theological Seminary. The fate of the Delaware organ is not known- it could possibly be still in place, a victim of neglect, relocated, or parted out. In 2018, the campus was put on the market again, as the Unification Church consolidated its facilities at its Manhattan seminary and headquarters. It's present use is unknown. -Scot Huntington
