2023-06-19 - Trustee minutes of the First Presbyterian Church of Troy, New York, indicate that a ca. 1837 organ built by Thomas Appleton (1782- 187 2) was sold second-hand to a "Mr. Carter of Saratoga." Carter founded the Temple Grove Seminary for young ladies in 1855; later promotional materials of the institution indicate that an organ course was offered. Nothing more is known. Most sources suggest that Temple Grove Seminary was the precursor of Skidmore College, although the ins titutions were not directly connected. -- *2006 OHS Organ Atlas* quoting MS, Trustee Minutes: July 15, 1857. First Presbyterian Church, Troy, N.Y. Lucy Skidmore Scribner purchased the building and grounds of Temple Grove in April, 1903 for the newly formed Young Women's Industrial Club. In 1911 the Club was re-named the Skidmore School of Arts and in 1922 was chartered as a four-year liberal arts college known from 1922 as Skidmore College. By 1922 the site of Temple Grove had evolved into the center of the downtown campus of Skidmore College. The Temple Grove Seminary building still exists in Saratoga Springs on the corner of Circular and Spring Street. -- Skidmore College Archive, Temple Grove Seminary Collection, website accessed 2023-06-19 -Paul R.
