2023-09-06 - From the Nashville Banner, April 18, 1926, page 41 in a multi-page article about the opening of Nashville's new Capitol Theater "The organ is made by Hatch and installed by that firm also. It is the largest organ in the entire state and was designed and built especially for the Capitol. It contains approximately 1,200 pipes and when planned the designers had in mid the necessity for low tonal quality and beauty rather than mere noisy volume. The result is an organ that is bond to create a sensation. The organist for the new Capitol is Leon Coles, formerly organist at the Belmont theater. Mr. Coles returned only recently from Chicago where he spent some time studying te particular problems of organs similar to the monster he will play here." The Capitol Theater was completely destroyed by fire in the early hours of Saturday March 16, 1929. Newspaper reports of the fire indicate that the fire originated under the stage and that the organ "was among the first to succumb to the flames." -William Dunklin
