2023-10-05 - The history of this pipe organ for its first 40 years is unknown, but by 1961 it was housed in what then was the First Reformed Church in Marion, NY. The stop list at that time, as confirmed by records of the Parsons Pipe Organ Company of Canandaigua, NY, was: Great 8' Open Diapason 8' Melodia 8' Dulciana Swell 8' Stopped Diapason 8' Echo Salicional 4' Flute Harmonic Pedal 16' Bourdon This is Specification No. 17 of the Hinners Company. It is a two-chest mechanical tracker action instrument with pneumatic action for the Bourdon chest. According to the Parson Company notes, the church suffered a fire in 1980 and although the organ was spared, the heat was enough to unsolder many metal pipes and blister wooden pipes outside of the Swell box. Replacement pipes from a Hutchings Pipe Organ built in 1909 were purchased, changing the registration to: Great 8' Open Diapason (used) 8' Salicional (from Swell) 4' Flute Harmonic (from Swell). Swell 8' Stopped Diapason (original) 4' Principal (used) 2' Block flute (used). Pedal 16' Bourdon (original). The organ was played through the end of the last Century but Parsons technician notes indicated it was failing, with leaks in the bass of the Swell and Great causing muddy and distorted tones. Apparently it was last played in 2007, after which the church was used as a construction storage shed with a leaky roof and the organ suffered minor water damage.
