2023-12-26 - From the *Niagara Falls Review *(April 28, 1915): "All Niagara Falls will be delighted to knoow that our townsman Mr. A. A. Huttlemayer, proprietor of the Queen Theatre, is having built for his popular Photo-Playhouse, one of the famous Smith Orchestral Pipe Organs, by the Smith Organ Company, North Tonowanda, NY, his attention having been attracted to this high class make of organs by his investigation of the large Smith Orchestral Pipe Organ in the handsome new Shea Hippodrome Theatre, Buffalo, NY. In securing one of these celebrated Smith Organs, Mr. Huttlemayer not only reflects much credit to himself and the Queen Theatre, but also to the whole city as well. For the Smith organs are acknowledged to be veritable triumphs of the organ builders art, and are famous for their quality, volume and variety of tone, and for their orchestral features. The Violins predominate, with their marvelous sweetness and variety of tone colors, and the Vox Humanas carry that realistic appeal so like human voices. The Clarinets with their resonant, woody tones, the Crystalline clearness of the Chimes, the pomp and grandeur of the Tibias and the liquid sweetness of the Flutes, to which the Xylophones lend further dignity, will all combine harmoniously and beautifully balances in this fine organ for the Queen Theatre. It is an accepted fact, that in the Smith Orchestral Pipe Organs the distinct tonal colors are more varied and beautiful than those obtained in any other organs, while the great volume, the unfailing reliability and rapidity of action all furnish that instant response which is so essential to orchestra demands, and which give to the Smith Organs a wider scope than is to be found in other instruments. This Organ will contain the following instruments: Tubas, Clarions, Tibias, Flutes, Piccolos, Violins, Diapasons, Clarinets, Vox Humanas, Xylophones, Chimes, Sleigh Bells, Drums and. Cymbals. The patrons of the Queen Theatre unquestionably have a superb treat awaiting them in the very near future, for this fine organ will be installed in the theatre during the month of May, and will be in operation on the twenty-fourth day of May, 1915. Parts of this great organ will come through the customs to-morrow." This instrument was superseded by a new organ prominently announced in 1924, and one wonders if mechanical issues plagued the instrument? While the builder of the later instrument isn't provided, a description of its resources is nearly identical to the Smith organ -- perhaps the pipework and toy stops were retained. In 1936 the Queen (later Capitol) Theatre organ was purchased by Drummond Hill Presbyterian Church to form the basis of a new instrument. -Andrew Henderson
