2024-10-10 - From The Daily Telegraph (Saint John, NB, November 24, 1882): "The introduction of a new organ into St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church here was celebrated this evening by one of the most enjoyable entertainments given in Chatham for a very long time. The organ question, of course, created some difference of opinion between members of the church and congregation, but these seem to be happily disappearing and will, it is believed, cease altogether in a very short time ... It was necessary to make a place for the organ, which was done by opening the south end of the church and building an addition in which to put it. This forms a large alcove, circular overhead and opening without obstruction of view into the main body of the church ... The floor of the organ room is about four and a half feet above the main door, and it has a massive imitation cherry and mahogany railing, with turned balustrades running around from the main wall on either side ... The organ was built by S. R. Warren & Son, of Toronto. It has a plain but handsome chestnut case, two manuals, two and a third octaves of pedals and nineteen front pipes; three on each side, and thirteen in the centre. The latter are corn color, relieved at top and bottom with maroon flock finish and gold leaf at the mouths, and gold leaf quatrefoils and bands. The instrument is ten and a half feet wide, seven and a half feet deep and seventeen high, and is built to full scale ... The instrument cost fifteen hundred and seventy-five dollars, which is paid in cash, and is pronounced excellent value for the money by Professor Gubb. The alterations made in the church together with the organ will cost about two thousand one hundred dollars, and it is conceded on all sides that the money has been well expended." -Andrew Henderson
