Notes

2024-10-15 - From the Hamilton Gazette & General Advertiser (September 5, 1853): "Hager [sic] & Vogt -- Organ Building -- We had the pleasure, last week, of attending a musical entertainment at the factory of Messrs. Hager [sic] & Vogt, the well-known organ builders in this city. The entertainment was highly relished by a very large audience on two successive evenings. The organ, which was played on this occasion by Herrman Kordes, the excellent Organist of St. Paul's Church, London, C.W., is a well finished and beautiful instrument, with two rows of keys, and designed for a large Church. We particularly admired the soft stops of the flute, viol d'Gamba, and dulciano, with the swell attached; the sounds produced were exquisitely sweet, and quite enchanting. The stops in number are sixteen, consisting in the Swell Organ of open Diapason, Flute, Dulciano, Principal, Stop Diapason; in the Great Organ -- open Diapason throughout, Principal, Twelfth, Fifteenth, Stop Diapason, Viol d Gamba, Trumpet, Pedal double Diapason bass; Pedal couple, Swell couple, Bellows alarm. The pipes are of metal except those of one bass stop, hence the Organ is well toned and rich in sound. Mess. H. & V. , we may well observe, have been very successful in the manufacture of Organs; the finest instruments in this country are from their factory, except that lately put up in the Cathedral of Toronto, but in making this comparison we must consider the size and cost of each. We hope an opportunity may be afforded to the Organ builders in this city of building an instrument equal in cost to that in Toronto; we do not hesitate in saying that as good and durable an instrument can be built here as in any part of Canada. The Organ, we learn, is intended for the Roman Catholic Church in Belleville, and will be removed to that place during this week." *Pitch levels in stop list are conjectured *Hagar is occasionally (though less often) spelled Hager in contemporary sources. -Andrew Henderson
