2024-12-29 - This entry represents the installation of a new organ. Identified through online information from Andrew Henderson (December 28, 2024): From the *Daily Gleaner* (Fredericton, NB, December 12, 1981): "The original organ for the cathedral was built by a Mr. Nash, from England. Bishop Medley, the first Bishop of the Diocese, was responsible for bringing Mr. Nash to Fredericton. Almost all the pipes for the organ were made in Fredericton, with a few exceptions, and those were sent from England. It was a large organ for its time, an instrument of three manuals, 33 stops and pedal organ. None of the original organ exists today." From the Daily Gleaner (Fredericton, NB, March 15, 1905): "The congregation of the Cathedral are meditating the installation of a new organ. The old instrument was built by T. Naish [sic], who was brought out from England by Bishop Medley to do the work. It was used on the day of the consecration, August 31, 1853, for the first time, and was played on that occasion by Mr. S. A. Halter, organist of Trinity Church, Boston, an Englishman of eminence in his profession. The old organ is one of three manuals and of 40 stops, with two octaves and half of pedals, and when it was new was far ahead of anything at that time existing in the province. But it has fared very badly at the hands of repairers and tuners at different times, and the improvement of modern builders are many and ingenious. Thus it comes to pass that many things about the organ are out of date, the mechanism being not only in bad order, but obsolete. It would be poor policy to spend any more money on patching it, and more economical in the long run to put in a new instrument. At the same time there is much in the old organ which could be utilized." -Andrew Henderson
