1869 Felegmaker Portable

(Stoplist, Daniel Tenerowicz, PIPORG-L Aug 1998)

As an aside, I have in my collection a one manual; 2-rank Derrick & Felgemaker "Portable" pipe organ from 1869. The ranks are an 8' Open Diapason and an 8' Dulcianna, with a common wood bass.

The portable pipe organ was an extremely convenient and relatively inexpensive instrument. The organ
was manufactured and assembled in the factory, then shipped ready to use to its destination without displacing any of its parts. There is a label claiming that a patent was granted on November 16th,
1866. However, no patent exists at the U.S. Patent Office in Washington, D.C. However, records at the
Patent Office do show that two patents for the "Portable Pipe Organ" were issued. The first was on
May 5th, 1868 and the second on January 18th, 1876. The first patent describes the construction and
operation of a one-manual portable pipe organ; the second patent describes a two manual portable pipe
organ.
