Notes

2004-10-30 - Only part of shrine to be built was a carillon tower (carillon never installed). Now privately owned, operated as a tourist attraction. Never was an organ.. -Database Manager

2005-06-25 - On-line update from john Ignatowski -- Sault Ste. Marie is Michigan's oldest city, founded in 1668 by Fr. Marquette as the new Jesuit mission headquarters after the destruction of the Huron mission at Midlands, Ontario. In 1968 the Shrine of the Missionaries was launched to commemorate the tricentennial of Sault Ste. Marie. It was to be a massive concrete church in the brutalism style to replace the existing 1881 St. Mary's Church. All that was built was the carillon tower before the project ran out of funds. Neither the planned Verdin carillon nor the organ, nor the church, were ever built. In 1986 the existing Victorian church was renovated. Its original pipe organ is long gone. -Database Manager
