2010-03-18 - Updated through on-line information from John Igoe. -- The earliest record of an organ is a contract signed in 1913 with Tellers_Sommerhof Organ of Erie, PA. The instrument had 2 keyboards and a pedalboard to play 8 ranks of pipes (426 pipes). The connection between the console and the pipes was Tubular Pneumatic. <br>When the present church was built, the parish purchased a new pipe organ from the historic Hook & Hastings Company of Boston, their 1931 opus #2600. <br>By 1980 the organ was approaching 50 years of age, and becoming decrepit. The congregation contacted Wicks Organ Company of Highland, Illinois about purchasing a new instrument. During negotiations for a new instrument, a used Wicks organ became available. It was Wicks Opus #4650 at First Presbyterian, South Charleston, WV. Originally built in 1966, the organ had only 12 ranks of pipes (about 600 pipes) and two manuals. The West Virginia organ was purchased, and combined with some of the better parts of the Hook instrument. <br>In the years since, additional pipework was purchased from various sources and added to the organ. Several years ago, a second console was installed near the pulpit. This allows the organist to play the rear gallery organ from a location nearer to the congregation and it allows the choir to sit among the congregation. This console is equipped with a MIDI-interface and other digital controls. It is possible for two organists to play the rear gallery organ simultaneously, one at the front console, and the other from the gallery console. -Database Manager
