2015-08-10 - Updated through online information from steve bartley. -- The attribution to Pomplitz as the builder of the organ for St. Gregory needs to be researched, as several dates and newspaper articles indicate that the organ was built by The Maryland Church and Concert organ Co.
St. Gregory the Great Church was formed in 1884, the school building was erected in that year. In 1886 the larger Gothic church was erected next to the school. (Sun Paper 11/29/1886 pg 1 describes the dedication, mentions an organist, but nothing on the organ. Sun Paper 4/12/1895 pg.8 "New Church Organs.- The Maryland Church Organ Company has just closed contracts with St. Gregory Catholic Church of Baltimore and the Zion Baptist Church of Porstmouth, Va., for new organs. Both instruments are to be large and of the two manual type")
The Maryland Church & Concert Organ Company was started by Leon Beaulieu who built and repaired organs, with others and on his own. According to his 1898 obituary, he had learned the trade in Canada, before coming to Baltimore in the late 1860s. August Pomplitz died in 1874, his wife and brother in law continued the business. The only sizable organ that they built in 1875 was for St. Joh's Episcopal, Waverly. That organ was incorporated in whole or part into Adam Stein's organ of 1908.
It is possible that the St. Gregory organ had some or much of a Pomplitz instrument from another church incorporated into the Md Church Organ. The Sun Paper does not reveal the dedication of the organ -Database Manager
