He was active as an instrument maker in Hartford, Connecticut by 1799. He was partner with Allyn Bacon of Hartford, Connecticut, 1812-1814; he was active in Philadelphia, PA, from 1816 until his death in 1852, as a music dealer, organbuilder, and servicing various types of instruments. One history of Philadelphia describes him: "He seemed to be a man of work, and was skillful with any kind of musical instrument. He professed himself able to make or mend organs, piano-fortes, harps, double-bass violins [sic], violoncellos, violins, guitars, lutes, clarionets, and flutes. Caitlin then had twenty years experience, and added to his advertisement, 'We tune all kinds of instruments.' " 2 Sources: David H.
