2015-11-23/2019-04-29 - From the OHS PC Database Builders Listing editor, Mar 13, 2016. - Giles Beach (1826-1905) apprenticed with Augustus Backus in Troy, New York. Returning to his home town of Johnston, New York in 1853, Beach established his own firm in a section of town which would later become Gloversville. In 1870, he built a four-story factory, and renamed his business American Church Organ Works. The building was destroyed by fire in 1876, it was inadequately insured, and Beach was unable to re-establish the firm. He continued doing business on a smaller scale as a service firm. 2016-03-12/2019-02-11 - From Builders editor, Stephen Hall, Mar. 12, 2016. Revised by editor, Charles Eberline, May 28, 2017. - Johnstown or Gloversville? The state of New York divides its counties into "towns" which are similar to "townships" in some other states. The towns may contain either cities or villages (both are municipalities, and their designation is dependent on their charter from the state, not their size.) The village is part of the town, but the city is not. In some cases, the town and a city or village within it may have the same name although they are different legal entities. There are two adjacent but separate cities: Gloversville and Johnstown. Both are located within the "town" of Johnstown, which is a subdivision of Fulton County. Gloversville was a village and therefore legally part of the town of Johnstown from 1853 until 1898, when it became a city. After it became a city, it was no longer part of the town of Johnstown, although it is surrounded on all sides by the town. The city of Johnstown is located south west of Gloversville.
