2006-11-02 - Identified through on-line information from James R. Stettner. -- This was the Merner-Pfeiffer Memorial Organ. It replaced the previous 1898 Hook & Hastings whose disposition is not known. The organ was installed in side-by-side chambers on both sides of the chancel, though there was a large façade of gold pipes higher-up at the front, center of the sanctuary. The organ was dedicated by the college community on Tuesday, December 1, 1931 at 3:15. The inaugural recital was that evening at 8:15, and was given by William H. Barnes, assisted by his wife Edith McMillan Barnes at the piano. -Database Manager

ACTION: E-P Primary VOICES: 43 STOPS: 63 RANKS: 45 PIPES: 3,030 & Unit NOTES This organ was the Merner-Pfeiffer Memorial Organ. It was installed across the front of the chapel and down the sides of the chancel. A large gold pipe façade spanned the front. The Kimball 'replaced' a 3-manual, 37-rank, 1898 Hook & Hastings – and almost all of the H&H stops appear by name in the Kimball stoplist. It is not specifically known if the Hook pipework was retained and revoiced for the Kimball, but there is evidence to suggest so. The organ was dedicated Tuesday December 1, 1931 at 8:15 p.m. By William H. Barnes, Mus. D. assisted by his wife Edith McMillan Barnes at the piano. The organ was enlarged in 1950 with funds from the estate of Miss Nellie R. Sherwood of Cedar Rapids. The additions were dedicated November 21, 1950.
