Notes

2007-02-27 - Identified through on-line information from James R. Stettner. -- This organ was originally built for the Circle (also National) Theatre in Portland, Oregon. It was relocated to the [old] edifice of Laurelhurst Presbyterian in Portland by an unknown person or firm at a presently unknown time. It was installed in two front chambers with no visible pipes. In 1976, the Presbyerians sold this building to the Laurelhurst Bible Church Evangelistic Center (a division of Union Gospel Ministries). Upon examination if February 1990, the organ was found to be in largely poor condition, though still partly playable. The Great was unplayable because the primary had been removed. The two Swell unison strings had been altered to become 2-2/3' and 2' registers. Of the intended 12 console toe studs, 4 still had their labels but didn't work; the remaining 8 were missing their labels. 3 of those didn't work, and the remaining 5 were missing the actual toestud. -Database Manager

NOTES
While this instrument is the first pipe organ in this church, it was acquired second-
hand. The organ had originally been built for and installed in the National Theatre in
Portland. Upon installation into Laurelhurst Presbyterian Church, the specification
remained unaltered. Who did the installation and when is not known. It could have been
the Guenther Organ Co. who were local. Or it might have been the Kimball Rep. Arthur D.
Longmore in Seattle.

In 1976, Laurelhurst Presbyterian Church sold the building to the Laurelhurst Bible
Church Evangelistic Center (a division of Union Gospel Ministries), and moved to a newly
built facility nearby on 33rd Ave. Their 'new' organ was again acquired second-hand. It
was a 9-rank Schlicker unit organ that was moved from the chapel of the Presbytery
offices in Los Angeles, California.

The W.W. Kimball was left behind in the old church. Upon examination in February of 1990,
the organ was found to be in largely poor condition. The Great division was unplayable
because the chest primary was missing. The expression pneumatics for the Great/Choir
chamber were ruptured and the shutters had been removed. In the Swell, two of the string
ranks had been crudely cut-down, de-bearded, and altered to provide a 2-2/3' and a 2'
stop. Other pipework in the Swell is somewhat damaged, but nothing beyond redemption.
