2007-04-28 - Identified through on-line information from David Donathan. -- The organ was installed in the State Street Methodist Episcopal Church in January, 1904 - two manuals, 14 ranks, $1750. Andrew Carnegie donated $600 toward the cost of the organ. State Street was a former name for Christ Church United Methodist. In 1908, the organ and the congregation moved to the Charleston YMCA where it was used until a new sanctuary was completed (1910). In 1914, the organ was sold to Simpson Memorial AME Church in Charleston (now Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church). In 1965, the tubular-pneumatic action was electrified, the facade was changed, and the organ was enlarged by the Charleston Organ Company under the leadership of Allan Harrah. All chests and the console were replaced. Of the original 14 ranks, 12 survived the 1965 rebuild. In 2005, Christ Church took repossession of just the pipes to this organ, which are currently in storage at Christ Church. Plans are underway to reuse these historic pipes in an antiphonal organ built by the Holtkamp Organ Company. The original organ exists only in photos . -Database Manager
2024-05-12 - From Rev. David Donathan, Minister of Music/Organist, Christ Church UM: This instrument, installed in 1904 in the State Street Methodist Church with funds donated by Andrew Carnegie, was moved to the stage at the YMCA in Charleston, WV in 1908 where the congregation of the State Street Methodist Church met until a new gothic building was built at the corner of Quarrier & Morris, Charleston, WV. This organ was sold in 1911 to Simpson AME Church, Charleston, WV where it served this congregation until the mid-1990s. In 1996, the organ was in disrepair, and Christ Church United Methodist, formerly known as the State Street Methodist Church, purchased the organ, took possession of just the pipes and "brought the organ home." The pipes will be used in an antiphonal organ designed by Chris Holtkamp of the Holtkamp Organ Company, Cleveland Ohio. This antiphonal organ will be matched in concept and design to the current pipe organ located in the Centrum of Christ Church United Methodist, Charleston, installed in 1975 by Walter Holtkamp, Jr, Chris Holtkamp's father. The antiphonal organ is scheduled to be installed in the summer of 2025. -Brad Engelland

Charleston, West Virginia Christ Church, United Methodist M. P. Möller Opus 477 (1904) GREAT 8' Open Diapason 8' Dulciana 8' Melodia 8' Doppel Flute 4' Flute D'Amour 4' Principal 2' Super Octave SWELL 8' Violin Diapason 8' Stopped Diapason 8' Aeoline 8' Gamba 4' Flauto Traverso 2. Flautino PEDAL 16' Bourdon We have 12 of these original 14 ranks in storage. One rank that was lost in a 1965 rebuild was the facade Open Diapason. From what I was told, it was in terrible shape. The other is the 8' Aeoline. The remaining 12 ranks (plus a new 8' Cornopean) will be reused in a new antiphonal organ for our worship space. This piece of our history will be turned into a new instrument for our space. It will complement our current 1975 Holtkamp tracker nicely. [Received via e-mail from David Donathan, April 26, 2007]
