2007-09-26 - Updated through online information from don belben. -- I am historian for the Grace U. Methodist Church, a successor church to First Methodist (1791-1968), and this information is from the files of the late Eliot Wirling, organist of First Methodist for several years before the building was closed in 1968. The 5 divisions were: Great, Swell, Choir, Echo and Pedal. After a limited fire, ca. 1936, the organ was returned to Estey and extensively rebuilt by them, with a new console. In the 1960s Mr. Wirling had the Echo Vox Humana installed in the Swell division in place of the Oboe, which was removed at that time. The organ therefore originally had 39 ranks, 2255 pipes. After the church closed in 1968, the Echo pipework and console were sent to the Estey Museum in Brattleboro, Vermont, but the remainder of the instrument was presumed lost in the major fire which occurred ca. 1972. -Database Manager

2009-06-05 - Updated through online information from don belben. -- As historian of a successor church, Grace U. Methodist, I have found this info in the First Meth. archives: 1) In 1936 there were actually 2 fires at the church which damaged the organ, not just one, and the organ was not rebuilt by Estey until 1939. 2)The church was closed in 1968 and then used as a courthouse, and it was reported ca. 1972, after inspection by a local organ company, that the organ had been badly damaged by vandals. The building was destroyed shortly after by fire. -Database Manager
