The Deaconess movement was started in the late 19th century within the Evangelical Lutheran church It might be thought of as a Lutheran order of Nuns who were trained as nurses and teacher, but the length of their duty was for 2-4 years. <br>In the late 20th century Coppin State College acquired the property, and it was torn down in the 1970s-80s, being replaced by a drab utilitarian brick building. A 1930s-40s booklet of the Deaconess Mother house, its mission and facilities can be found in the Enoch Pratt Library's Main branch, Baltimore.
