2023-11-23 - The deterioration of the temporary wooden chancel structure in which the Pilcher organ was located, made it necessary in 1964 to relocate the instrument to the west end gallery. The current curved brick apse was built onto the existing brick nave at this time. This relocation project was undertaken by Aldo Bertorelli, the local representative of Casavant Freres. He was an organ builder and also a member of the parish. Bertorelli rebult the Pilcher organ as a three-manual instrument. He changed the key and stop action from mechanical (tracker) to electro-pneumatic. In close dialog with organist-choirmaster Bernice Mozingo, he added several ranks of pipes to the Great and Swell divisions and a console from the Casavant organ that had been recently removed from Christ Episcopal Church, the new diocesan pro-Cathedral. A new Positiv division was installed over the gallery stairs in the northwest corner of the gallery. The organ case, designed by Mr. Bertorelli, was built by Rufo Lutes, another parishioner. The stoplist was designed by Robert Nowicki. By 1986, many of Bertorelli's changes and additions had become mechanically unreliable. Lawrence D. MacPherson, a parishioner, and organ builder of the L.D. MacPherson Co., rebuilt and expanded the instrument. Most of the labor and expertise, pipework and other materials were donated by Larry MacPherson. The Bertorelli console had deteriorated and was no longer capable of playing. This presented the opportunity of modifying the instrument tonally and a new stop list was drawn up by Graham Cook, (also a parishioner) and MacPherson. Working largely on the present specification, MacPherson replaced the pitman chests and expanded the tonal design. Notable among his contributions is the 32 ft Contre Bourdon that was taken from St. Francis Xavier, a Franciscan church on the campus of St. Louis University. The organ project progressed off and on over a five year period when money and labor were available. A major push for completion of the instrument was made in 1991. The Lilly Trust at Christ Church Cathedral, provided a grant to install pipework and complete the organ exclusive of the casework. The project was hastened by the terminal illness of MacPherson. There was a great deal of concern that the organ would not be completed if MacPherson's health deteriorated before the work was done. After MacPhersons's death, the Indianapolis organ firm of Goulding & Wood began taking a more active role in the instrument's upkeep. Up to this point, Goulding & Wood had been a close partner with MacPherson, supplying many of the recycled ranks that became incorporated into the organ as well as the main blower. Work accomplished by Goulding & Wood since the early 1990's includes the completion of the Swell box, installation of the 32 ft reed, the decorative casework and facade pipes housing the organ. During the Fall of 2005 a new three-manual console and entirely new switching and combination action were completed. The organ was finally dedicated on Sunday, November 6, 2005. I was a substitute organist and member of the congregation in the early 2000's. -Timothy E. Conyers
