2023-01-30 - From the *Montreal Gazette* (April 11, 1853): "We owe Mr. Warren an apology for not having before drawn the attention of our readers to the noble instrument now erected in the Hall of the St. Ann's Market, and intended for the new Anglican Cathedral, Toronto. An idea seems to have taken possession of many persons that Organ builders are not to be found in Canada of sufficient experience to compete with those of Europe or the United States. We are, however, extremely gratified in being enabled to undeceive our readers. We rejoice to say, we are not now obliged to have recourse to the States when requiring Organs for our Churches. We are warm advocates of the encouragement of Home manufactures and Native industry, and it gives us pleasure to observe that the authorities of St. James' Cathedral have in the present instance given their order to a Canadian manufacturer. It is a credit to our city and Province that such noble instruments can be manufactured here, and the master-piece which Mr. Warren has produced does credit alike to his enterprise and his ingenuity ... The number of pipes exceeds 1700; and there are 45 ranks of pipes, which can be increased to 53 in the pedal organ, by use of Copulas. The Organ is 25 feet by 13; the height being 46 feet. The key action extends in front from 5 to 7 feet. The double swell organ is 7 feet by 7. There are 2 bellows and 8 wind chests. The interior is admirably arranged, giving easy access to any of its parts ... This Organ, though not so large as many European ones, is yet of considerable magnitude, even compared with them. Thus, St. Paul's Cathedral Organ contains only 30 stops; Westminster Abbey 23, with 1348 pipes; Christ Church, which contains the largest and finest organ in London, has 71 stops; the Birmingham Town Hall Organ has 50; York Minster 52; the Parish Church of Wigan, in Lancashire, also contains a magnificent organ, built by Hill of London, which contains 47 stops and 2345 pipes. To complete our list, Haarlem Organ, which has long been considered the largest in the world, and cost £10,000 has 60 stops, 2 tremulents [sic], 2 couplings or springs of communication, 4 separations or valves to close the wind chest in case of a cipher, and 12 pair of bellows, each 9 feet by 5, and it contains nearly 5000 pipes. From the foregoing list, our Organ, it will be seen takes no mean position, and we trust it will be the precursor of many more noble instruments -- home manufactured -- and of which we may feel proud. Many of our Churches are very ill provided in this respect. The French Church in particular, possesses of shockingly poor apology for an Organ, when we take into consideration the size of the building and the undoubted ability of the congregation to raise the necessary funds for a suitable instrument. An enterprising citizen has suggested that as we have now the largest Church and largest Bell in North American, we should have the largest Organ with them, and that if the authorities of the Parish Church feel themselves unable to give such an order to Mr. Warren, that a public subscription should be started for the purpose; and we believe he is willing to give a considerable amount himself. We trust his scheme may be carried into execution. We have now but to inform our readers that the great Organ will remain for a few weeks in the St. Ann's Market Hall, which will be opened on Tuesday's and Friday's between the hours of 3 and 5 P.M., when its powers may be attested, and the beautiful variety of its combinations will delight all hearers." -Andrew Henderson
