2023-08-13 - From *The Clinton New Era* (December 21, 1887): "St. Paul's Church Organ -- We are requested to make known that there may be a little delay in the arrival of the new pipe organ for the Episcopal church. A letter has been received from Messrs. E. Wadsworth & Son, the builders in Montreal, in which they say, that most unfortunately while the cases containing the large ornamental pipes was being loaded by the G.T.R. men at Montreal, they very carelessly did not adjust the dogss firmly, and the case, a heavy one, fell to the ground a distance of eight feet, completely smashing it and badly wrecking the contents. The church wardens are hourly expecting a telegram to say exactly when the repairs can be effected. It is hoped that arrangements will be made for opening on New Years Day. Since writing the above a telegram has been received stating that it is impossible to have the organ ready for New Year's Day." The organ was dedicated on February 9, 1888. The instrument was repaired by Albert Matthews of Toronto: "On Tuesday morning Mr. Matthews, of the firm of Breckles & Matthews, Toronto, with an able assistant, began the work of putting the organ in St. Paul's Church in thorough repair. The action has been adjusted, and some small improvements made in the pedal connections, numerous small leaks in the bellows and wind chests have been stopped, and finally the whole instrument has been carefully tuned; Mr. Matthews being a specialist at this work. It is now in better order than for many years, and it is hoped at some future time to put in a larger bellows and a pneumatic pedal action."
