2023-08-14 - From *The Ottawa Citizen* (January 9, 1901): "Last Friday night a large congregation was present in Knox church, the occasion being the opening of the fine new pipe organ by a recital by Mr. Wm. Reed of Quebec, formerly of St. Andrew's church Toronto. The recital was much enjoyed and was added to by delightful vocal solos by Miss Ethel Taylor, Miss Watson and Mr. A. C. Black. The congregation is to be congratulated on having installed such an excellent organ, it being one of the best of its kind yet manufactured by the Karn-Warren company, of Woodstock. The organ cost $2,000 and contains about three thousand five hundred and fifty feet of tubes and eight hundred and sixty-three speaking pipes. There is a Crescent [sic] pedal which brings on all the stops of the organ and the case of the organ is made of oak, the front pipes, of which there are thirty-nine, being ornamented in gold and other colors. The bellows are double-leathered throughout and furnished with double feeders and the wind chests are furnished with double valves so as to render the touch at the key-board as light as possible, and in using the couplers a heavier touch is not required. The kyes and pedals are of the mosst approved pattern and the stop-heads have ivory name-plates. The interior woodwork of the organ is coated with shellac varnish and paint all to prevent the influence of atmospheric moisture. All the larger metal pipes are composed of the best Belgium [?] zinc and the smaller ones are made of a composition of lead and tin. The reed pipes are made of spotted metal and the tubes of the lower notes are made of zinc in order to give them great strength. A water-motor supplies the instrument with air. The action throughout is tubular pneumatic." At the time of church union, Knox Church merged with a methodist congregation and was renamed St. Paul's United Church, using the Knox Church building. It is possible that Karn-Warren pipework was reused in Casavant, Op. 1609, installed in 1939. -Andrew Henderson
