2013-05-17 - Updated through online information from Patrick J. Whitehead. -- Organ and Choir was lowered to its present location during a substantial renovation as a result of a fire. At some point in the earlier 1960s, a detached two manual console was installed and the organ with that addition was dedicated on September 14 1963 with members serving as security during a very turbulent time in Birmingham. The next day September 15, 1963 at 10:22 am, four girls were killed in a blast caused by several sticks of dynamite. The organ was significantly damaged causing the Great Organ to become silent. Many efforts were made to repair the instrument but they were all inadequate. Finally AE Scheuter renovated with work including but not limiting to replacing wind chests, modify action to direct electric, replacing the console, and re-stenciling pipes in the facade. -Database Manager
