2013-10-24 - Altered and relocated existing organ. Identified by William Dunklin, using information found in David Junchen's The Wurlitzer Pipe Organ, an Illustrated History, p. 610. -- This organ, a style 6 Special was repossessed by the Wurlitzer Company when the original owner, New York's Century Theatre closed in bankruptcy.
In 1914 Wurlitzer sold opus 4 to the Vitagraph Theatre and Wurlitzer gave it opus number 33. The Diaphone was extended to 32' and the Tuba extended to 16'. The cost was $21,270.
Though popular as one of New York's first truly grand movie palaces, the Vitagraph only operated for two years. It was then renamed Criterion Theatre and presented live performance instead of movie. As the Criterion, it alternated between legitimate stage shows and movies for the next 20 years until being torn down in the mid 1930's. Fate of the organ is unknown.
A new Criterion Theatre was built on this site in the 1930's. -Database Manager
